Christmas for children in Juigalpa (Nicaragua)

For farm families living in the countryside of Juigalpa it is difficult to keep one's head above water. Some small farmers produce just enough to survive, but extreme drought can lead to famine in the countryside. Most of the small farmers have insufficient income to provide their families with such basic needs as clothing, school, health care, a good house, etc. There is no money for extras.

A Christmas backpack filled with school supplies

It is almost time to go back to school again. There will be many children from Jandira, a suburb of Sao Paolo, eager to start the new school year. In South America the school year runs from February to December. With expectant faces and backpacks filled with pens and notebooks, the children set off to meet their teachers. There is a group of children in the same city, however, for whom going to school is not so one-two-three. They are the ones from "Casa Familia e Vida", a children's home on the edge of one of the favelas, the slums of which there are so many in Jandira.
