Disabled children at KG VI center and school learn as much skills to look after themselves as possible. The Occupational Therapy department now has an outside kitchen where they teach the children basic cooking in the afternoons. This is a brick building with open sides to allow for ventilation. One side has a solid wall which the school would like to paint with some cheerful pictures of fruit and vegetables. The school has a skilled painter who has done other work for them and who will be contracted to paint the wall.
About KG VI Centre and school:
KG VI provides education, rehabilitation and boarding facilities to children from age 5 to 18 with physical disabilities and hearing impairments. It is the only secondary education facility in Zimbabwe for children with disabilities and the only primary school in the southern part of the country. The children come from all over the country. Those that board only go home for holidays, at least ..if they still have a home. (For the growing number of orphans the Center organizes permanent housing.) All children stay in small units with an accompanying house parent, to create a family situation. They develop their self-reliance by sharing household chores, managing a budget for groceries and preparing nutritious meals.
Education and training
KG VI offers tailor made education to its pupils and focuses especially on the capabilities and talents of the pupil. The school prepares them for further education or – if they do not have the necessary academic skills - a job, by organizing job training.
KGVI has 360 pupils, 92 children are orphaned, but the others are all vulnerable children as well whose parents rarely able to pay school fees. KGVI is strongly dependent on donations.
