Centro de Encontro is an independent NGO and has organised many activities for street children in Maputo over the past 15 years. Rene Boezaard from the Netherlands started this project in 1994 en was able to hand the organisation of the project over to a local staff who were trained by himself. The staff works together with many volunteers from the area.
A day full of activities
This special day has been organised several years in a row now and every year it is a great success. The children look forward to it and are counting on it. A day to forget their sorrows, and hardship of life on the streets. The day is packed with activities such as music, theatre, dancing that they can participate in, there is food, clothing en lots of games to play together with other kids.
Again in 2011 Centro de Encontro wants to continue this tradition. Unfortunately the local businesses were not interested in funding this project. Most likely because public opinion is very negative towards the street children of Maputo.
A large chunk of the budget is allocated for food however the organising committee wants to make sure that when these kids show up they at least go away with a good meal. The children also receive small presents, mostly school supplies such as colouring pencils, writing materials etc. The program will be much the same as last year, a meal, a quiz, giving out the presents by the school teachers for the little ones. The 6th grade then goes to the pool and is treated to a drink and chips while the 4th and 5th grade does sports and games.
The total cost for the meals. rental of equipment for the DJ, transportation, clothing (shirt, pants and slippers) and the presents/school supplies is € 1000 .
