Democratic Republic of Congo
Finalisation of an in-patient building at Rumu Health Centre
In the north of the Democratic Republic of Congo you will find the town of Rumu. It is located in a remote and not so densely populated part of the Congo. In 1992 a Health Centre was opened here for the local community. It was an instant success. The people that ran the Health Centre found out that they needed an in-patient facility and they started building this in the late 1990's. Unfortunately
the project never got finished due to the civil war that lasted from 1998 – 2003. After this terrible period the community tried to pick up their lives again and continued to work on the outbuilding. The years of neglect and weather had some impact on the building but luckily the walls were still standing. Slowly but surely the building is being finished and now the only thing that is missing are funds to buy cement and paint to finish the walls and ceilings. For this the Rumu Health Centre has requested the help of Moments of Joy.
Most of the work of the centre is done by the community in their spare time as they would love to have access to the in-patient facility should they fall ill. The closest hospital is 15 km away and in this rural area the walk there would often take a long time.
Patients will recover quicker when they are close to their relatives and the doctors that work in the Health Centre are convinced that this will make everyone feel more comfortable.
Total amount needed to finish this project: € 2.446,-
