BOOK DELIVERY AT MPHERERE CDSS
Mpherere Community Day Secondary School is situated in Ntchisi district. It is 109km away from the Capital City. The school serves about 700 to 800 students each year, operating in two shifts one is the morning and the other is the afternoon. However, there has always been a case were the school fails to sustain its outstanding performance in the National examination due to lack of text books.
In January 2017 Student Driven Solutions (SDS) received a donation of funds from Moments of Joy Amounting to K988, 894.48 to buy books for the school. The book purchasing exercise took several months as we waited for a quote of books to be submitted to us by the school. After the submission, the actual purchase took two weeks for it involved collecting quotations from several bookshops and finally Claim Book shop was selected among the list.
On 25th May 2017, two hundred and eight text books of various subjects were bought i.e. Biology, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, English Literature etc. The books were delivered on the 26th May 2017 by Dumiso Banda, SDS operations staff.
A ceremonial event was organized on the day and the books were passed on to Students through the acknowledgment of the head teacher. The head teacher and a male student representative opened the floor in reception of the books.
In his remarks the head teacher welcomed this development and was very grateful that an addition of books to the library has been made. He further, thanked us for this and encouraged the students to make use of the books.
Edith Christopher a form 2 student was very delighted to have such a donation of books to her school. She confessed that she was failing to do her homework because she had no place to borrow text books. ‘’With the coming of these books, I have great hope that I am going to do well in my final secondary school exams”. The same was with other students as each went to pick up a book of their subject of interest.
The American Jeffrey Hunter Kramer moved to Malawi in 2015 after his graduation from college to to work here for two years as a volunteer. He started a project in the village Ntchisi for the Mpherere Association for Development in Education. With financial support from his family he started a programme for class assistants and helped with setting up a computer lab for the village school. He now is seeking funds to buy textbooks for the school.
The school consists of 830 high school students between 13-20 years old. 75% of these children come from families living below the poverty line of $ 1.25 € a day. Children who get their diploma here are usually the first in their family who have gone through a school.
The current library at the school uses text and reading from the 1990s and not only are they out of date in terms of content, they are also quite worn. Most books are held together with tape. There are also too few. Students often have to share one textbook with 10 or more others in a class of 100 children.
This project will make a big difference to the functioning of this school. It is expected that student’s reading and writing skills will also improve faster being able to follow the visual see words as the teacher reads out loud.
