The School of Hope is a primary school in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The school was set up by foreign volunteers for children from slums, who would not otherwise get an education. The school is virtually free of charge. (Parents are asked to around 8 Euro Cent per month to show their commitment.)
The school is now teaching 200 children. The children in grade 1 to grade 5 get lessons five days a week from 9 to 2 pm; due to lack of space, the infants have lessons in the afternoons after the older children have gone home.
The children follow the state curriculum, but are also taught English, Drawing/DT and Music. And, exceptionally for Bangladesh, there is no physical punishment in this school.
There is one simple, free meal a day and also some fruit, and as these children could never see a doctor or dentist (too expensive!) there is also free medical and dental care, if necessary.
The school is a great success. The parents and children are motivated, and very few leave. This is exceptional because, even though the school is free, the children could work if they did not attend school. Even small children often work in Bangladesh. If they don't work, the parents have to do without the (little) money that the children could earn.
The school is completely dependent on donations. The annual budget is about 15,000 Euro. So far, the school has succeeded in obtaining the necessary funds, but this is not easy and the school is very conservative in its spending. There is no money for extras.
Moments of Joy would like to pay for those extras.
One of those extras the school asked our help for is furniture. The children now get their daily free meal I their classrooms. It would be better – and nicer – if they could leave their classrooms for lunch. This would it more of a break and they would be able to interact with the other kids. The school has a room in which 100 kids could have their lunch at the same time, but it needs tables and benches. And new plates and cups are needed as well.
A carpenter could make the needed wooden furniture - of good quality so it will last several years.
10 tables cost: € 1500
20 benches cost: € 900
200 cups and plates cost: € 100
